Joshua Taylor http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00006.html#0001358 and Elizabeth Burns July 21, 2005, 2:01 pm Arizona Republican-Dec 16, 1904 General George Christ December 16, 1904 Arizona Republican Newspaper A telegram was received yesterday from Nogales announcing the death of general George Christ, former survey-general of this district. General Christ had been in ill health for a long time and had been almost helpless for more than a year. Recently his condition became more alarming and on Monday, his son, George Christ Jr, chief clerk in the mineral division of the surveyor general's office received a telegram urging him to leave at once for Nogales. He left that night. General Christ was a native of Pennsylvania, having been born in beaver County of that state. His parents while he was still young, went to Iowa and in was in that state that General Christ received his education and began particularly active career. After having been engaged in farming for some time he embarked in the merchandise business and shortly after became prominent in the political affairs of the Hawkeye State. He was for four years chief of police of Des Moines. Later he went to Washington as chief of a bureau of the interior and was afterward a special agent of the treasury department. It was in that capacity that he first came to Arizona in 1882. General Christ was one of the most active and consistent republicans of the territory. He was national committeeman for four years from 1888. He was a delegate to various national conventions and was identified wit the work of the National League of Republican clubs. General Christ is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
