He was a brother of Mrs. James Carrol and Mrs. Anna White. Both these ladies with the latter's two daughters, Misses Bertha and Anna White left on last night's train for Los Angeles to attend the funeral, which will occur on Saturday. The late John Downing was a veteran of the Civil War in which he saw much distinguished service. He fought on board the Monitor during the memorable battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. He received two wounds during the operations at St. Phillips and Jackson. He served under Farragut at the battle of Mobile Bay.
