THOMAS COCANNON May 11, 1897 Arizona Republican Newspaper Thomas Cocannon was fatally shot at Congress late on Saturday night by Mamie Bohn, a prostitute who used to live in Phoenix. The shooting occurred in a saloon and so far as an intention to kill Cocannon was concerned, was accidental. He died just the same in twenty minutes. The shot was actually fired at another prostitute named Mina Losey. The ball took effect in Cocannon's stomach. He was buried on Sunday afternoon and the woman is in jail in Prescott. Two things are proved by the incident: One is that Yavapai County's reputation for disorder is being conscientiously and regularly sustained and the other is that Cocannon was destined to enter eternity by a mistake. About a year ago he was stabbed and nearly killed one night by a man who thought he was someone else. May 15, 1897 The examination of Mamie Bohn for the killing of Thomas Cocannon at Congress was held at the above camp yesterday resulting in her being bound over to the grand jury to answer a charge of manslaughter. She was brought up from Congress this afternoon and lodged in jail. She has a child about four or five years old to be provided for which she left with parties in Congress. The woman is quite polite, young and rather handsome. It was a sad sight indeed to see her march to the county jail to answer for taking the life of a fellow human. July 3, 1987 Arizona Republican Newspaper The trial of Mamie Bohn, charged with murder for the killing of John Cocannon at Congress on May 8 has been in progress today in the district court. The defendant had trouble with another woman named Mina losa, and it is claimed that the shot intended for her, hit Cocannon, killing him. The defendant is a prepossessing young woman, dressed neatly and appeared in court with her little child about three or four years old. It is said, she is devotedly attacked. The little tot is an exceptionally bright and good looking child.
