JOHN HUGHES April 26, 1899 Prescott: John Hughes died in the county jail last night as the result of being knocked down by a fellow prisoner. Hughes was awaiting the action of the Grand Jury on a charge of assault to commit murder on a man named Melloy at a railroad grading camp last fall. He has manifested a vicious disposition ever since his arrest assaulting Jailor Yeomans a few days ago. Yesterday he attacked a fellow prisoner named Eagan, when the latter struck him with his fist, knocking him down. His head struck the cement floor of the jail, fracturing the skull at the base of the brain, causing death in a few hours. A corner's jury exonerated Eagan. Hughes boasted to the prisoners that he had killed two men and if taken into court he would never come out alive for he intended to kill all the men he could.
