Walter J. Smith Arizona Silver Belt March 20, 1896 Walter J. Smith, of the firm of Smith and Grum, was murdered at Miunehaha Flats on the 13th says the Gazette. Two men entered the store and both fired at the proprietor, who tried to run toward them. They kept shooting and their victim fell dead while passing through the side door. Mr. Lapham, his clerk, was clubbed into insensibility with a gun and the loose change of the store was taken. They could not get into the safe. Fred Grum, the partner, was not at home. Mr. Lapham came to presently, but the assassins had gone, Mr. Button at whose house was Fred Grum, mounted a horse and reached Phoneix on Sunday morning. He gave additional information to the sheriff, who had been notified by sheriff Ruffner of Prescott. The clerk says one, probably both of the men were Mexicans.
