He was born at Manchester, Massachusetts, January 19, 1857, son of Joseph Haskell and Mary Elizabeth (Girdler) Morse. Mr. Morse is a graduate of the University of California, of the class of 1879, and from that date until he was retired, March 1, 1924, was with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. During 1882-83 he was astronomer for an expedition to Southeastern Alaska, and again did astronomical work in Alaska from 1891 to 1898. He was employed in general surveys in the Pacific States and Alaska until 1902. He was observer Trans-Pacific Longitude, San Francisco-Manila, 1903-04, and was employed in an Alaskan boundary survey from 1904 to 1913. During 1914-15 he was engaged in astronomical work on the Atlantic Coast and in general surveys. During 1916-18 he was director of coast surveys at Manila. From 1919 until his retirement Mr. Morse was inspector of the San Francisco Field Station. He was honored with the office of president in 1910 of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. He is a Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Pi Gamma Mu, Phi Delta Theta, member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is a Republican and a member of the Congregational Church. On April 4, 1888, he married Miss Mary Walker Eastman. Mrs. Morse was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, in 1860, daughter of Artemus S. and Hannah (Bean) Eastman. Her father was a New Hampshire merchant. Mrs. Morse was educated in the East and was eighteen years of age when she came to California, with a married sister, and settled at San Rafael, and in 1880 moved to San Francisco. She was secretary of the Insurance Combine until her marriage in 1888. Mr. and Mrs. Morse had three children: Henry Eastman Morse, who is married, and his three children are Henry E., Jr., Alida Morse and John Girdler Morse. Alice Fremont Morse is the wife of O. C. Hansen, of San Francisco, and has two children, Benjamin Morse Hansen and Christine. Isita Girdler Morse is Mrs. E. W. Foote, of Tokio, Japan. After their marriage Mrs. and Mrs. Morse lived in San Francisco until they removed to Berkeley in 1911. In Berkeley she took a prominent part in club and social life, being a member of the Berkeley Woman’s City Club, the Sequoia Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
