Well known to the people of Oakland as a lady of culture and an active figure in its social life, Mrs. Nellie Van de Grift Sanschez has long been a resident of California, and is one of its most enthusiastic admirers. She was born at Indianapolis, Indiana, and comes of old and honored families of this country. On her paternal side she traces back in a direct line to Jacob Leendertsen Van de Grift, a native of Holland, who came to the American colonies early in the seventeenth century, and is buried in what is known as the old Van de Grift Cemetery in Andalusia County, Pennsylvania. On her mother's side Mrs. Sanchez traces back to Joran Kyn, later spelled Keen, who came from Sweden to the American colonies in 1642, and was living on the Delaware River when William Penn arrived in this country. The paternal great grandfather on her grandmother's side, John Miller, and the maternal great-grandfather, John Keen, both fought under General Washington. John Miller was buried with public honors by the city of Philadelphia in recognition of his services in the American Revolution. His name is still to be found in the original records in Independence Hall. Jacob Van de Grift was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he was an architect by profession, and a builder by calling. In religious faith he was a Protestant, while politically he was a Democrat. His wife, mother of Mrs. Sanchez, was also born in Philadelphia, and she, too, was a sincere Protestant. There was also an English strain in the Keen family through an ancestor, the famous Capt. James Cook. Mrs. Sanchez acquired her early educational training in Indianapolis, Indiana, partly under the tutelage of David Starr Jordan, and this was continued in the University of California after her family had migrated to San Francisco. She is a Republican, and deeply interested in civic matters. Having been granted suffrage, she desires to prove worthy of the privilege of citizenship. During the World war she was one of the steady workers in connection with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and was otherwise interested in war activities. In 1880 Mrs. Sanchez was married at San Francisco to Adulfo Sanchez, a descendant of one of California's Spanish pioneers. One son was born to them, Louis Adulfo Sanchez, who was graduated from the University of California, and is now a civil engineer.
