In all, more than two hundred and fifty sources were consulted. The starting point for this work, as it probably will be for future historians of Berkeley, was Dr, William Warren Ferrier's substantial histories of the city (1933) and the university (1930). Other works of special value were William Carey Jones' Illustrated History of University of California (1895) and a master's thesis on early Berkeley by Mary Ruth Houston (1925). Much new material was discovered, principally in magazines and newspapers. Articles published in early issues of the Grizzly Bear, Overland Monthly, Sunset, and University Echo (in university archives) were particularly illuminating in regard to the growing pains of the city and its precocious university. Recent developments, principally Berkeley's civic venturesomeness, have been surprisingly well covered by current periodicals. Newspaper files, in general, proved rewarding. The most valuable material from this source came from special editions, such as the Berkeley Advocate (Holiday Edition, December, 1892), Berkeley Gazette (National Publicity Edition, 1916; 74th Birthday Edition, May 2-9, 1940; and Diamond Jubilee Edition, April 4, 1941), and the Berkeley Reporter (New Year's Edition, 190O). In addition, seventy Berkeley residents, from Mayor to housewife, submitted graciously to interviews. They searched their memories and settled many historical inconsistencies; and they gave access to rare letters, manuscripts, pamphlets, and clippings that added life and color to the story. The university opened its archives, permitting the direct use of College of California documents, early reports and catalogues, photographs and letters, many of them unique copies. For the benefit of the reader who wishes to carry the story of Berkeley beyond these pages, the list of sources used has been combed and only the principal items recorded in the bibliography below. With a few exceptions, archival material has been omitted. 149 BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS BAILEY, CHARLES A. Berkeley the Beautiful (San Francisco: n.p.,c. 1889). BAKER, J. E.
