H. Bates, second lieutenant, 103d Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Marcheville, France, September 26, 1918. He displayed the highest quality of courage and leadership in leading his platoon through to its objective under a heavy barrage of machine gun and artillery fire, without flank support.
