Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Charles E. H. Bates, second lieutenant, 103d Infantry. For extraordinary heroism
in action near Marcheville, France, September 26, 1918. He displayed the highest
quality of courage and leadership in leading his platoon through to its objective
under a heavy barrage of machine gun and artillery fire, without flank support. He
held his objective under murderous artillery and machine-gun fire until relieved.
Residence at appointment: 727 Paru Street, Alameda, Calif.
