Mr. Burgess had lived at 2733 Claremont Boulevard, Berkeley, for 20 years before moving to Sonora and a life of semi-retirement about 10 years ago. Born in St. Johns, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Joshua C. Burgess, a pioneer Presbyterian minister who brought his family to the Hayward area in 1893. EARNED MINING DEGREE Seven years later Mr. Burgess graduated from the Hayward High School and went on to earn a degree in mining from the University of California. In 1906 he began work with mines and mining firms throughout the Mother Lode region of Nevada and California. He brought into successful operation the Nevada Wonder Mine (silver), the United Eastern Mine (gold) and the Carson Hill Mine (gold) and worked on mines in South America as well. MAGAZINE WRITER He was a contributor of articles to the Economic Geology, Mining and Scientific Press. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. Mr. Burgess is survived by a daugther, Mrs. Bauer E. Kramer of Oakland; two sons, John D. of Desert Park and Peter D. Burgress of Grosse Point, Mich[igan]; and eight grandchildren.
