FRYER, U. C. LANGUAGE EXPERT, DEAD. Was World Authority on Oriental Tongues; Honored by Chinese for Translations of Alien Books. BERKELEY, July 3. Professor John Fryer, 88 years old, and emeritus professor of Oriental languages and letters at the University of California, is dead today [July 2] after an illness of four months at his home, 2620 Durant avenue. Professor Fryer was a world authority on Chinese letters and sciences. He was one of the few white men in history to be honored by Chinese with membership in the Society of the Double Dragon, to which he was elected in 1898 to the first rank, third degree. His services were valued to such an extent by the Chinese government that he was made head of the department that translates foreign books into Chinese, where he served from 1867 to 1876. As head of the department at Shanghai he became the friend of many of the highest rank in Chinese life. Professor Fryer was born in Hythe, Kent, England, on August 6, 1839. He was married twice, his first wife dying in England in 1879. In 1882 he married Miss Anna Eliza Nelson of New York City. In 1895 the professor was appointed to the University of California staff on which he served until his retirement in 1919. He was a member of a large number of literary and scientific societies both in the United States and abroad. Professor Fryer is survived by a daughter, Mrs. M. C. Threlkeld [?], of San Francisco and two sons, Charles E[dmund], of McGill University, Montreal, and George B. of Shanghai. The funeral will be held Thursday at 3:30 from Grace Unitarian church.” END AND Oakland Tribune July 4, 1928 (Wednesday) Page 31, Column 8. “FRYER – In Berkeley, July 2, 1928, Prof. John Fryer, beloved father of Annie Fryer Threlkeld; Charles E. and George B. Fryer, age 88 years, 10 months, 26 days. Friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services Thursday, July 5th, at 3:30 o’clock p.m. at First Unitarian church cor. Dana and Bancroft Way. Friends may call at chapel of Edward E. Niehaus Co., 2640 Grove street at Derby St., Berkeley, until 2:30 o’clock p.m. Thursday. Interment Mt. View Cemetery [in Oakland].” END AND Oakland Tribune July 5, 1928 (Thursday) Page 13, Column 2. “RITES SAID FOR DR. JOHN FRYER. BERKELEY, July 5. Rites were said at the Berkeley First Unitarian church this afternoon for Dr. John Fryer, professor emeritus of oriental languages and literature at the University of California, who died Tuesday at his home, 2620 Durant avenue. Officials at the institution which Dr. Fryer served for so many years and old family friends were honorary pallbearers. They were President W. W. Campbell, Prof. C. R. Bradley, Wallace Wood, Ralph Fisher, Col. George D. Edwards and Judge A[ustin] A[lanson] Sanderson. Rev. E. C. Vandoriann, pastor of the church, read the service. Dr. Fryer, who was 83, had been for 34 years [sic sentence]. Since 1912 he has been on the retired list.
