JOHN FRYER DIES AT AN ADVANCED AGE Wife of State University Professor Passes Away BERKELEY, May 10. After an illness of three weeks in an Oakland sanatorium Mrs. Eliza N. Fryer, wife of Prof. John Fryer, head of the department of oriental languages and literatures at the university, died this morning at an advanced age. Death came while she was asleep and was due to heart failure. With her husband, the venerable professor of the university and authority on Chinese literatures, languages and customs, Mrs. Fryer resided for many years in China, and was received on several occasions by the royalty of that empire. Mrs. Fryer was active as a worker in the First Congregational church of Berkeley and in the various clubs. Since her return with her husband from a tour of China last year she has been making her home at Cloyne court in Ridge road.
