John Frederick Hargrave, With Donner Party Part of Way, Is Buried. Funeral services were held this afternoon from the family home in Dover street for John Frederick Hargrave, well-known pioneer, who as a child accompanied the Donner party some of the way on the journey to California. [not entirely correct] Hargrave died [at his home in Oakland] on Monday following a brief illness. William Fowler, grandfather of Hargrave, with his two sons, William and Henry, came to the coast in the early forties, taking up a large grant of land in Napa valley, including the present site of Calistoga. In 1845 John Hargrave and his wife, Catherine Fowler Hargrave, determined to join their kinsfolk in the new district. Hargrave died on the journey [near the Great Salt Lake], leaving his widow and four children, of whom John Frederick was the youngest. In the spring of 1846 the pioneers joined the Harlan party at the Platte river. Tragedy threatened when the man guarding the oxen slept and seven of the animals strayed. Through the aid of George Harlan, new animals were provided and the party continued on their way. William Fowler, uncle of Hargrave, familiar with the country through which the passage was made, hurried his sister and her children through Bear river valley into California just ahead of the snowstorm which trapped the Donner party. They arrived in Calistoga in October, 1846. Hargrave married Miss Julia Smith, daughter of Henry C. Smith and granddaughter of George Harlan, in Livermore in 1875. For many years he engaged in farming in the Livermore and San Ramon valleys. Later he was interested in mines in Placer county. The family home was established in Oakland in 1902. [can't read line of scanned text on the Internet] . . . widow, a son, Harold F. Hargrave, and a daughter, Mrs. H[arold] L[loyd] Drury, survive the pioneer. Hargrave was born in Missouri in 1843."
