Mr. Hargrave, who was 74, was vacationing in Payson, Ariz[ona], when he succumbed. His grandfather, Henry [Clay] Smith, came to California on horseback in 1845 and started the first general store in Mission San Jose, now part of Fremont in Alameda County. Mr. Smith later became a member of the California State legislature and in 1853 introduced a bill which created Alameda County out of Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties. Mr. Hargrave’s mother, Julia Smith Hargrave, who died in 1931, was born in 1848 and claimed to be the first white child born in East Oakland’s Diamond District. Mr. Hargrave worked for State Belt Railroad and Southern Pacific until his retirement last year. His wife, Edeana, 5407 Dover St., Oakland, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Drury, Walnut Creek, survive him.
