“Hargrave Services In Oakland

Funeral services were held in Oakland yesterday [August 3] for Harold F
[rederick] Hargrave, member of a pioneer California family, who died 
unexpectedly last Thursday [July 30].

Mr. Hargrave, who was 74, was vacationing in Payson, Ariz[ona], when he 
succumbed.

His grandfather, Henry [Clay] Smith, came to California on horseback in 1845 
and started the first general store in Mission San Jose, now part of Fremont in 
Alameda County.

Mr. Smith later became a member of the California State legislature and in 1853 
introduced a bill which created Alameda County out of Contra Costa and Santa 
Clara Counties.

Mr. Hargrave’s mother, Julia Smith Hargrave, who died in 1931, was born in 1848 
and claimed to be the first white child born in East Oakland’s Diamond District.

Mr. Hargrave worked for State Belt Railroad and Southern Pacific until his 
retirement last year.

His wife, Edeana, 5407 Dover St., Oakland, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Drury, 
Walnut Creek, survive him.

Inurnment [at Chapel of the Chimes] was handled by Grant Miller Mortuary, 2050 
Telegraph Ave.” END

(Tuesday). Page 25, Column 3.  Harold Frederick Hargrave was the son of John 
Frederick Hargrave and Julia Ann (Smith) Hargrave.  He was born, possibly at 
San Ramon, Contra Costa County, on October 9, 1889.
