Hargrave, Grandson of Pioneer, Dies. Harold F. Hargrave, grandson of the man known as "the father of Alameda County" and son of the first white child born in Oakland, is dead at 74. Mr. Hargrave died unexpectedly Thursday while vacationing in Arizona. His grandfather, Henry Smith, came to California on horseback in 1845 and started the first general store in Mission San Jose. He later became a member of the state legislature and in 1853 introducted the bill creating Alameda County. Mr. Hargrave's mother, Julia Smith Hargrave, who died in 1931, was born April 18, 1848, in a redwood grove in what is now the Dimond [sic] District where her father worked in a sawmill. Mr. Hargrave, a native of Oakland, was employed for many years by the State Belt Railroad until his retirement in 1963. He is survived by his widow, Edeana, of the family home at 5407 Drover St. [Oakland], and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Drury of Walnut Creek. Funeral services were held today at Grant Miller Mortuaries."
