W. Harlan, passed to rest on Thursday night [March 6]. Jacob W. Harlan was born in Indiana in 1828, his parents being pioneers of that section. In 1845 [sic] Harlan crossed the plains and took part in all the stirring events of the Fremont campaign. In 1851 he settled in this valley, but sold his property to E. T. Crane. He then embarked in business in San Francisco and at one time owned considerable real estate there. He came back to San Leandro in the latter fifties and was quite prosperous, owning the 75 acres formed by the triangle of Estabrook St., Hayward and San Lorenzo Aves. In 1872 he sold out and went to Livermore, where he lived for some years. For the last few years he has lived in San Leandro. He was a good-natured, social man and his death will be regretted by all who knew him." Additional Comments: I did not look at the newspaper but this may be from a San Leandro column in the Livermore paper, hence the geographic references. Jacob Wright Harlan went overland from Independence, Missouri to California in 1846 as part of his uncle, George Harlan, party. Jacob wrote a book "California '46 to '88" that had two printings in the 1800s.
