He was 71 years old. Heart failure caused his death. Mr. Hemme’s first location in California was at Danville, in Contra Costa County, where he purchased 3000 acres in early days and created a beautiful country place. In the days of the Comstock mining excitement Hemme was rated as a millionaire. His fortune was dissipated in the ‘70s, however, and he lived quietly after that at his home in Berkeley. His philanthropy was well known, especially in church circles. He contributed to the old Calvary Tabernacle and the Presbyterian churches of San Francisco sums aggregating $150,000. He was a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Pioneers’ Society. Eight children and a wife survive him.” Additional Comments: San Francisco Call (San Francisco, California). November 2, 1904 (Wednesday). Page 4, Column 7. He was born January 10, 1833, in Prussia. He married Minerva Elizabeth Ish.
