W. Langan, Lawyer 50 Years, Dies. Heart Failure Takes Veteran Figure in Oakland Courts; Practices Half Century Though Invalid 14 Years. George W[ashington] Langan, 76, pioneer attorney of Oakland, died late last night at his home in the Broadway apartments, 30 Grand avenue, following a brief illness. Langan was a picturesque figure in the Oakland courts where he had practiced continuously for the last 50 years. Although a partial invalid as a result of a train accident 14 years ago, Langan continued his legal practices. He was for 13 years a law partner of Asa V. Mendenhall [his brother-in-law.] With him when he died were his wife, Mrs. Ella D. Langan [Luella “Ella” Dora Mendenhall] and two adult sons, Philip M. Langan of Oakland and Chester G. Langan of Stockton. A daughter, Mrs. Ursula Swent, is in Mexico. Langan was a native of Michigan. He taught school in Contra Costa county in the early seventies, while preparing himself for admission to the bar. He was a member and former commander of Admiral D. D. Porter Post No. 169, Grand Army of the Republic, a member of Lew Morris post of Livermore and treasurer of Lodge No. 94, Woodmen of the World, of Oakland. Death was due to heart trouble.” END Additional Comments: Oakland Tribune (Oakland, California), December 10, 1925 (Thursday), Page 35, Column 8.
