Born at San Ramon [in Contra Costa county] and a resident of the Eastbay for more than a quarter century, Mrs. Llewellyn died Thursday night [January 16] at her home at 3900 Harrison Street [in Oakland] following a brief illness. She was the daughter of Joel Harlan, who came across the plains in 1846 and built the first frame ranch house in the San Ramon Valley. The ranch on which she was born served as the boundary line between Contra Costa and Alameda Counties when this county [Alameda] was formed. Educated at the old Livermore Academy, Mrs. Llewellyn was a well known artist in her early years and was noted as an instructor in painting. Surviving are two brothers, Elisha [C.] Harlan, of Alameda, and Fred Harlan, of Pitisburg [sic]; a grand-daughter, Laura Lorraine Llewellyn, of San Francisco, and three nieces, Mrs. Mabel Davidson of Alameda, Mrs. Carmen Gelderman, of San Ramon, and Helen Hazel Llewellyn, of San Francisco. She was the widow of W. A. Llewellyn and the mother of the late Lorin L. Llewellyn, Oakland engineer, who died last July [26]. Services under the direction of Grant D. Miller will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Chapel of the Chimes, and cremation will follow." END The following death notice appears in the same issue on page 8, column 4: "DEATHS LLEWELLYN - In Oakland, January 16, 1936, Mary Harlan Llewellyn, loving sister of Elisha [C.] and Fred[erick] Harlan and the late Addie Stolp and Helene H. Osborn. A native of [San Ramon] California. Friends are invited to attend the services at the Chapel of the Chimes (California Crematorium) 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, Tuesday, January 21, 1936, at 2 o'clock p.m. Friends may call at the Cathedral Chapel of the Grant D.
