Magill, prominent Alameda insurance man and underwriter, who died yesterday, will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from his late residence, 1911 Buena Vista avenue. In addition to the large number of friends and personal acquaintances who will be present, the services will also be attended by the members of the Alameda Lodge of Elks and Oak Grove Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. The pallbearers will be selected from the membership of these two organizations. Magill was a prominent member of both. The Rev. H. H. Shires of Christ Episcopal church will conduct the services. Magill was 90 years of age and a native of Westport, County Sligo, Ireland. He went to Canada when a boy and then came to California, settling at Rincon Hill, San Francisco. In 1868 he came to Alameda and has lived here continuously until his death. The original Magill home, ‘Oak Shade,’ is now a public park. Magill was an authority upon insurance law and fire underwriting. He came to the Pacific coast as representative of the Phoenix Insurance company of New York. Some years later he changed to the Home Mutual company of California, remaining with that concern until it was consolidated with the Firemen’s Fund Insurance company. He was also connected with the Home Company of New York. Magill is survived by a widow, Mrs. Annie M. Magill, and two sons, Robert H. and Charles Irving Magill and two daughters, Mrs. Florence M. Souther and Mrs. E [ugene] H. Stevenson [Evelyn]. His son, Charles, is following his father’s steps in the insurance work, while Robert Magill is a San Francisco newspaperman.” END AND Oakland Tribune May 29, 1921 (Sunday) Page 17, Column 5 “Robert H. Magill Buried in Alameda Alameda, May 28. The funeral of Robert H. Magill, early Alameda resident and dean of the underwriters of California, was held from the late residence, 1911 Buena Vista avenue [Alameda], this afternoon. A great number of sorrowing friends and acquaintances were present to pay their last respects to the memory of the aged insurance man, who was probably the best authority upon insurance laws that California has had. Magill was 90 years of age and a native of Ireland. He came to California in the early days, settling in Alameda in 1868. He was a member of the Oak Grove lodge of Masons, and Alameda Lodge of Elks. Both organizations paid last honors to him and furnished the pallbearers. The Rev. H. H. Shires of Christ Episcopal church delivered the funeral oration. Cremation followed the services.” END Additional Comments: Note that there are two article above.
