Page 1, Column 3. “Death of a Pioneer William Meek, a well-known and highly-respected pioneer of the Pacific Coast, died at his residence near San Lorenzo, Alameda county, at 5 o'clock yesterday morning [December 27], aged 63 years. He was a native of Ohio, and removed to Oregon in 1846, being then 29 years old. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, made many friends, and was successful in most of his undertakings, helping largely to develop the abundant resources of that new Territory. He became convinced that the region contiguous to the Bay of San Francisco would advance in wealth and prosperity more rapidly than any other part of the Pacific Coast, and in 1858, acting with that energy for which he was noted, be removed to this State and purchased lands on the San Lorenzo Creek. Here he became interested in general farming, carried on a nursery for some years, planted orchards, raised fine stock, and took an interest in all that aided the horticultural progress of the State. Mr. Meek had been a Regent of the University, and he contributed liberally to education and charitable enterprises. He was a man of quiet and kindly spirit, and of honest, straightforward business habits, and his loss will be severely felt.” END AND Daily Alta California, December 28, 1880 (Tuesday). The following is from the San Francisco Bulletin of December 27th: William Meek, a well-known and highly respected pioneer of the Pacific coast, died at his residence near San Lorenzo, Alameda county, at 1 o'clock this morning [December 27], aged 63 years. He was a native of Ohio, and removed to Oregon in 1846, being then 29 years old. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, made many friends, and was successful in most of his undertakings, helping largely to develop the abundant resources of that new Territory. He became convinced that the region contiguous to the bay of San Francisco would advance in wealth and prosperity more rapidly than any other part of the Pacific coast; and in 1858, acting with the energy for which he was noted, he removed to this State and purchased lands on the San Lorenzo creek. Here he became interested in general farming, carried on a nursery for some years, planted orchards, raised fine stock, and took an interest in all that aided the horticultural progress of the State. Mr. Meek has been a Regent of the University, from which institution his son graduated a few years ago, and he has contributed liberally, and without ostentation, to educational and charitable enterprises. A man of quiet and kindly spirit, and of honest, straightforward business habits, his loss will be severely felt, and his memory will long be green in the hearts of the pioneers, whose ranks are thinning so fast.” END AND Daily Alta California, December 30, 1880 (Thursday).
