Born to Norman and Marta Saarheim, Judi lived a life of adventure, spontaneity and passion. She died "without regrets," having stated, "I did everything I wanted to do." At four, Judi followed her family to the Fiji Islands to build a sawmill operation. At nine she returned, working alongside family to develop Astoria's Olney Mill. As Homecoming and Rally Queen, Judi spent winters creating "slightly risque', off-beat skits that kept kids interested," but traded pompoms for XtraTufs to work her family's summer fishing business in Bristol Bay, Alaska. After college, Judi worked at Tikchick Lodge, met her future husband, and at 22 followed him to the bush of Alaska where she helped establish a school in Skwentna. At 24, they created Talaheim Lodge, a family-run business that continues to thrive today. After 25 years as a lodge owner and teacher in Alaska, Judi's talent and passion for the visual arts landed her in California where she received an MFA in Arts and Consciousness. Inspired by fly fishing and nature, Judi's ability to put invincibility and vulnerability on canvas culminated in several works that exhibited across Alaska, Oregon, California and New York. For ten years, she continued to share her artistic talents with students, lobbied in Sacramento to keep art in public schools, and was awarded Best Art Teacher in the Oakland School District. Judi's capacity for positivity and the ability to follow her heart inspired those around her. She spent the last three years surrounded by family and friends, living with cancer but without abandon; traveling, painting, golfing, hosting parties, reminding those around her what life is all about. Judi's final wishes stated, "I trained my children and friends well enough to give a wonderful celebration of life, so, Go At It." And thus we host a trilogy of celebration: A final art exhibition and reception will be held at Judi's Cypress Art Studios, 1450 4th Street, #8, on Sat., Oct. 15th, 3 to 6pm in Berkeley, CA. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Paul's Supper Club, 360 12th St., on Sat., Oct. 22nd, 5 to 8 pm in Astoria, OR. An Alaskan ceremony will be held on the Talachulitna River, as per Judi's request, she will return home to rest, much like the salmon do after a long life of adventure.
