Obituary, Oakland Tribune, Tuesday, June 6, 1944: Rites Held for Naval Officer
Last rites were held today for Lieut. Comdr. John C. Mitchell, 48, officer in 
charge of the U.S. Naval Air Station, radar school in Alameda. He died Thursday 
at the Oakland U.S. Naval Hospital after a lingering illness.
A former instructor of the Oakland Central Trade School, Commander Mitchell was 
commissioned in the Navy in May, 1942.
He is survived by his widow, Elsie, of 633 Haight Avenue; a son, Fireman 1/c 
John Mitchell; and a brother, Samuel S. Mitchell of Santa Rosa.
Services were conducted at the Grant D. Miller chapel at 11 a.m. with burial to 
follow in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Francisco.
