Munday June 9, 1916 - October 26, 2004 Walter P. Munday, 88, died suddenly on October 26, 2004, following surgery. He was born in San Diego on June 9, 1916 and attended school there. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939 and was assigned to the Medical Corps at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco. Many of the men wounded at Pearl Harbor were sent to Letterman and Walt worked with them on the surgical ward. In 1942 he was re-assigned to the Medical Detachment at Ogden Arsenal in Utah. Here he met his future wife, Kathleen, who was secretary to the Post Surgeon. They were married on June 9, 1944 (his birthday). At the end of the war they went to San Diego where their two children were born, Susan and Brian. He transferred into the Veterinary Corps which involved food inspection of meat products being purchased by the Armed Forces. In 1954 he was sent to Korea for about 6 months and then to Japan where his family joined him for the next two years. He was then assigned to the Presidio in San Francisco and worked in the South Bay and East Bay area. He retired in 1974 after serving 22 years in the Army and 10 years with the U.S.D.A. Meat Inspection. He was an avid golfer for most of his adult life. He was a painter and was a volunteer art instructor for seniors at Seifert Center for 15 years. He was a Mason for many years and belonged to the Stockton Art League and SIRS Branch #67. Walt was one of nine children, three of whom have survived - Charles of Stockton, Dorothy Yocum of Santa Maria and Gardner of El Cajon. Walt is survived by his wife of 60 years and his daughter, Susan of Oakland and son Brian of Stockton. Memorial Services will be held Monday, November 1, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 & Harney Lane, Lodi.
