D. Smith, Crosses Divide. Headed Washington and Livermore Schools Before 1890. Most of the pioneers of this vicinity will learn with regret of the death of James Dale Smith, formerly principal of the Livermore college, which was attended by many from the Hayward community in the years beftween 1875 and 1890. Mr. Smith died at the Masonic home at Decoto Wednesday, his passing mourned by many old timers. Mr. Smith came to Contra Costa county as a child with his parents soon after 1850. Before 1875 he was principal of the Washington college at Irvington. For the following 15 years he was principal of the Livermore college, which he owned and managed. J. D. Armstrong of Hayward was his pupil in 1882 and 1883. Mr. Smith for more than 50 years was a member of Eden Masonic lodge at San Leandro. After 1890 he became interested in farming, owned much land in this county and was fond of blooded horses and cattle. Funeral services for Mr. Smith, in charge of the Sorensen Brothers' mortuary, have not been arranged as yet."
