Smith, Daughter Of Alameda County Founder, Dies. Miss Emma C[aroline] Smith, daughter of the California pioneer know as the “father of Alameda County,” died yesterday in a Berkeley hospital. Miss Smith, 89, taught school in Livermore from 1877 until her retirement in 1919. She had since been known among her friends for her “globe trotting.” Her father, Henry C[lay] Smith, was elected to the State Legislature in 1852 and introduced the bill that created Alameda County. He founded and named the town of New Haven, afterward changed to Alvarado, and made Alvarado the first county set of Alameda County. Miss Smith was born in the old mission at San Jose in 1850, five years after her father had crossed the plains from St. Joseph, Mich. After her retirement, Miss Smith moved to Walnut Creek, where she made her home with her niece, Mrs. Bessie Hargrave Drury. She is survived also by other nieces and nephews, Harold Hargrace [Hargrave], Helen Smith Walton, H. Clinton and Leslie C. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. J. Henry Thomas officiating. She was educated in the public schools, Livermore College and San Jose Normal and began teaching early in the ‘70’s. Her first school was in the May district of Alameda County.” END Additional Comments: Oakland Tribune, March 27, 1939 (Monday), Page 1, Column 4.
