Berkeley, Nov. 5 - Mrs. Mary J[ane] Swift, who lived in California 71 years, coming here across the plains [in 1846] with the Donner party [Harlan party] and enduring hardships en route to which her father succumbed [at Great Salt Lake], died at her home, 3131 Ellis street [in Berkeley], yesterday [November 4]. The remains were shipped to Healdsburg for interment this afternoon [at Oak Mound Cemetery]. Mrs. Swift was 80 years of age. She came west with her father [John Hargrave] and mother [Catherine (Fowler) Hargrave] when a girl, accompanying the Donner party [Harlan party], which was prevented from reaching the California plains by heavy snow at Donner lake in the Sierras [sic]. Her parents, however, escaped being snowed up by taking what was known as the "hard" trail and reached the Pacific coast without delay. Surviving Mrs. Swift are two sons, Grant [Richard Grant Swift] and Fred Swift [Frederick Swift], and a brother, Fred Hargrave [John Frederick Hargrave] of Oakland."
