A requiem mass will be said tomorrow at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church for James Hugh Tennent, 91, retired cotton rancher and pioneer resident of Metropolitan Oakland, who died Wednesday at a local rest home following an illness of four months. Tennent was born December 11, 1856, at Pinole. His father was Dr. Samuel Johnson Tennent, an English physician who came to California in 1848, after serving in the Hawaiian Islands as collector of the port and physician to the royal family. Tennent’s mother was Rafaela Martinez Tennent whose ancestors had come to California from Spain with Anza, and who had settled on a land-grant rancho at Pinole. It was at the Pinole ranch, where Dr. Tennent stopped to spend the night on his way to Sacramento to start a medical practice, that he met and later married the Spanish senorita. He never reached Sacramento. McCLURE GRADUATE James Tennent was a graduate of the old McClure’s Military Academy here. In 1887 he married the late Louise Allen, a teacher at Lafayette School (now the Oakland High School). She was the sister of Superior Judge John J. Allen of Oakland. After their marriage, the Tennents lived on the Pinole ranch until 1898, when Tennent left for a three-year trip to Alaska [during the Klondike gold rush]. In 1905, following his return to California, Tennent developed a cotton ranch in the San Joaquin Valley [in Kings County], which he worked until 1928, when he moved to Oakland to live with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Tennent Carleton, 1047 Underhills Road. CALIFORNIA PIONEER Besides Mrs. Carleton, Tennent leaves another daughter, Mrs. Margaret Tennent Botts, Corcoran, Calif., and three grandchildren, James Tennent Carleton, Pittsburgh, Pa.; John Frederick Carleton, Oakland, and Miss Marjorie A. Botts of Corcoran, a student at Stanford University. He was the brother of Mrs. Anna T. Burns, 19 Edgecroft Road, Berkeley, and was a member of the Society of California Pioneers. Following the mass at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Margaret Mary’s Church, Emerson Street and Excelsior Avenue, burial will be held at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Martinez. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 9:30 o’clock tonight at the Funeral Chapel of the Albert Engel and Company, 3630 Telegraph Avenue.” END Additional Comments: Note that there are two items above related to the life, death and funeral of Mr. Tennent.
