"Majah" Wates, chimney sweep, cakewalker, banner bearer and town character, is dead from consumption at the County Infirmary. Tall, gaunt, quick of wit and always among those present at every public gathering of political import, the familiar negro passed on last night [October 31] after months of suffering.
