S. N., were introduced, gave society in the college town a surprise today by announcing that she was secretly married to Augustus Monroe of Berkeley on September 20 at San Rafael. Justice of the Peace McGee performed the ceremony. Mrs. Monroe has had a picturesque career. She was a Honolulu girl, Miss Mary Coney of the well-known Coney family in Hawaii. She married Frank Ashton in the '90's [1893] and came to the mainland, where she kept up a correspondence with Rear Admiral Merry, whom she had met on the islands. When the Ashton divorce suit was tried the love letters from the naval officer were introduced and created a sensation. After the divorce Ashton kidnaped [sic] his little girl, Leonie, from the mother, and a chase up and down the coast for the baby brought the Ashtons again to the front. Later the pair remarried [1905] and lived at 1721 Grove street, in Berkeley, until Ashton's violent death last winter. He was drowned in the bay near Alameda.” END Additional Comments: San Francisco Call, October 9, 1906 (Tuesday), Page 6, Column 1.
