He tilled the soil till 1852, when he followed the tide of emigration westward, crossing the Atlantic and coming direct to Butte county. He mined a short time at Enterprise, and also at Centerville. In 1853, he settled at Dogtown, where he has since resided. He engaged in merchandising for a number of years, and has always done a great deal of mining.
