This celebrated valley is about twenty-five miles north of Oroville. It contains a reservoir of the same name belonging to the Spring Valley Hydraulic Gold Company of Cherokee. The first settlers of the valley were Dr. A. W. Thompson, and his nephew, who came from Illinois. They erected the first house. Nearly contemporaneous with them were Charles W. Mullen, and his son, W. H. Mullen, who put up a log-house on the property, now owned by J. B. Mullen. G. G. Marquis, who still resides in the valley, came from Columbus, Ohio, in 1849, and settled in Concow in 1856. The valley took its name from a tribe of the Concow Indians, numbering seven hundred, who were camped there when it was first settled. Mr. Marquis has been one of the venturesome and enterprising men of the early days. Since coming to California he has had many successful ventures in mining and merchandising, followed by reverses. He kept a store at Stringtown, in early days, and when Thompson's flat began to be developed, settled there for a time. He was one of the first men in the county to investigate quartz mining. The hotel at the valley is kept by J. B. Mullen. It is located on the sunny slope of the hill, 2,000 feet above sea level, and within a few hundred yards of the reservoir. It is a popular resort for pleasure-seekers in the summer months, trout-fishing in the neighborhood being excellent. A postoffice is about to be established here, when a stage-line will be run. Concow valley has also a good school. Additional Comments: Extracted from: HISTORY OF BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, IN TWO VOLUMES. I. HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA FROM 1513 TO 1850. BY FRANK T. GILBERT.
