As we have already stated in the general history, Wyandotte had the first school organized in that part of the county, and on the sixth of May, 1857, Bangor and Salem districts were set off from it. The Evansville district was then included in Oro township, and as its territory is principally so now, we shall leave its history to be taken with the other schools of that township. WYANDOTTE DISTRICT.—In 1863, the school was furnished with new, home-made furniture. In 1869, the building was enlarged to 20x38 feet. Mr. Wm. Dunstone, the present clerk of the board in this district, is probably the most experienced trustee in the county, and, in the judgment of the present writer, the best in all respects. Under Mr. Dunstone's faithful and intelligent management, the district has been always supplied with the best teachers to be found, and has had an uninterrupted prosperity. The manner in which the library fund is appropriated and the library kept, is worthy of especial mention. In the spring of 1879, the people of the district voted a special tax for building purposes, and during the summer of that year the old building, which had been the first in the county, was taken down, and in its place a large and handsome one erected, with large library-room, two ante-rooms, and three porticos. This building cost, in round numbers, $1,500, and the elegant furniture with which it is supplied cost $300 more. Two acres of ground where the house stands are deeded to the district. BANGOR DISTRICT.—There has been probably less change of trustees and teachers in this than in any other district in the county. The school has had uninterrupted prosperity. The large and comfortable school-house, furnished in the best style, stands on an eminence in the midst of the village. SALEM DISTRICT began in 1861, with L. Duncum as teacher. In 1879, the district voted a tax for building purposes. The old house, which stood on a dry, barren hill, some distance to the north-east of Mr. Nurbrot's place, was disposed of, and a large and substantial new school-house built at a site a mile south, in a beautiful grove of oaks. The school is supplied with elegant furniture and all needed apparatus. UPHAM DISTRICT was organized in 1862, with Isaac Upham, after whom the district was named, as teacher, in 1863. The district has always been in good hands and well managed. They have a good, substantial building, centrally located, and the school has had steady prosperity. FAIRVIEW DISTRICT.—Last Chance, as it was at first called, but now known by the more euphonious, though perhaps less significent, title of Fairview district, was formed by action of the supervisors, December 31, 1869. The district has a good house, well situated and elegantly furnished. Trustees Jones and Brager, the present incumbents, are faithful to their trust.
