We have already noted that the first school in the county was at Bidwell; but after the removal of the county-seat, and the decline of that town, the records make no mention of any school at Bidwell for some time, and no money is apportioned to Bidwell township or district until January 1, 1866, when the district is credited with fifty-three census children. November 8, 1862. the supervisors formed what was called Mountain Cottage school district, in Bidwell township, but it seems to have been an abortive effort. May 9, 1866, the supervisors made an order dividing Bidwell district by a line from Bald rock diagonally across by Berry creek to north fork of Feather river, and forming in the southern half the Canyon creek district. February 9, 1867, there was an order that all the settlers along Berry creek be transferred from Canyon creek to Bidwell district; but May 9, 1868, the old line was again established. It could not be possible for any line to be satisfactory which ran through a settlement so far away from either school as the people along Berry creek are. The trouble was relieved on the twenty-fifth of August, 1874, by the formation of Bald Rock district, which included all the families along and adjacent to Berry creek in a separate school district. BIDWELL DISTRICT, retaining the old name, is the northern part of the township, with its school-house one mile south of the Mountain House hotel. The school-house is getting old, but has recently been repaired and furnished with the best patent desks. CANYON CREEK DISTRICT, which has its school at the old town of Bidwell, has a pleasant little school-house, nicely furnished, and maintains a school of about a dozen pupils. BALD ROCK DISTRICT was formed August 25, 1874, and includes the country on both sides of Berry creek. A plain but comfortable school-house was built, located about two miles east of the Berry-creek hotel, near the ranch of G. W. Reagan. In the spring of 1881, this house was burned, supposed to be the work of an incendiary; but being well insured, as the law requires, was soon replaced by a better one, and this latter one is well supplied with patent furniture.
