It is believed that the first burial was in 1851. It is typical of most cemeteries that were created near mining camps during the Gold Rush. Poverty Bar Cemetery Reintered & CALIFORNIA PIONEERS REINTERRED FROM “POVERTY BAR CEMETERY” This cemetery was originally located where Comanche Reservoir is now. Between the towns of Burson in Calaveras County and Buena Vista in Amador County. It is, also a mining camp cemetery created during the Gold Rush. Those listed were known to have been buried at Poverty Bar Cemetery now covered the waters of Comanche Reservoir.
