The camp was located at Oregon Gulch, which was named for a group of prospectors from Oregon who worked the area during 1849. In 1854, the town had three hotels, two churches, several saloons, a brewery, livery stable, a smithy, restaurant, post office, stores, and many homes. The fire of 1854 nearly wiped out the town. The town was rebuilt and only parts of the stone structures remain today. At one time the towns population was over 20,000. At time of survey there were 162 unknown/vacant plots in Section A.
