Monday morning he was stricken and paralyzed, and though receiving the best of medical attention, his case was hopeless. The deceased was born in this county, near Fourth Crossing, sixty-one years ago, and for his boyhood days he lived in Sheep Ranch, where his father was for many years a trusted employee of the Sheep Ranch mine. As a young man he attracted attention for his many high qualities and marked ability. About thirty-five years ago he moved to Murphys and commenced the mercantile business in the old store for many years occupied by Riley Senter, and later by Manuel & Garland, whom he succeeded. Later he built the large two-story building opposite the hotel, which he occupied at the time of his death. He at once assumed a leading place in Murphys, conducting an extensive and prosperous business. In 1890 he was elected Supervisor of Murphys Township, and served his term with credit to himself and his district. He was a member of Ophir Lodge F. & A. M., San Andreas lodge I. O. O. F and Crescent Chapter O. E. S. He always took an active interest in the social events of the town, and was a faithful advocate of all local improvement. During his lifetime he maintained a high character for honest and square dealing and moral standing. His open hearted genial disposition made him a wide circle of friends. In his death both the local community, and the county have sustained a severe loss. He was married to Mary Barrow and two sons, Ray and Earl, and one daughter, Mrs. Della Bartini (sic), survive him as well as the wife, who is seriously ill. Three brothers, Ben, Milton and Lucien and four sisters, Mrs. Ashton Howard, Mrs. Warren Garland, Mrs. Wm. Caster and Mrs. W. G. Snyder. The funeral was held at Murphys, Thursday, p.m. at 2 o’clock, under the auspices of San Andreas Lodge I. O. O. F. and Ophir Lodge, F. and A. M., the former conducting the services at the hall and the latter at the cemetery. Crescent Chapter O. E. S. also acted as escort. The funeral was largely attended, nearly every town in the county being represented. The services at Masonic hall were conducted by San Andreas Lodge, No. 50, I. O. O. F. of which the deceased was a member. E. F. Floyd acting as N. G. and Alfred Metz as Chaplain. The San Andreas choir furnished beautiful music throughout the whole service. The Rev. McGill made the closing prayer. At the cemetery Ophir Lodge, F. & A. M. of which he was also a member, conducted the services, F. W. Fisk acting as Master. Both lodges deposited the evergreen in the grave, as did also the members of Crescent Chapter O. E. S. There were many beautiful floral gifts deposited on the grave.
