Hubbart was born in 1925 in Auburn, Washington, and moved to California at the age of eight. He served as a signalman in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and then embarked on a career in journalism that spanned 40 years. His work as a reporter and writer included stints at the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times, the Stockton Record, as well as other newspapers in California, Arizona and Oregon. During his 10 years in Newport, he lived his dream of having his own newspaper. His weekly papers became known for their incisive reportage and lively editorials. When health issues prompted retirement and a return to the warmer climes of California, Hubbart returned to his other early love - Jazz, New Orleans style. He disinterred his old clarinets and saxophones, and his old talent as a horn player bloomed anew. Hubbart was soon in demand on the Dixie- land circuit, delighting audiences as a team player and a soloist, whose unique tones ranged from jubilant to heart-breaking. He directed his own band, the Jasstown Revelators, for 13 years. Hubbart is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sherry, and his stepson, Edward Wollett, of Sutter Creek; his brother, Alan Michael of Auburn, and two daughters, Lori and Kerry by his first marriage. In accordance with his wishes, Hubbart's ashes will be scattered at sea with a U.S. Navy honor guard. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Amador or the San Joaquin Dixieland Society, P.O. Box 4746, Stockton, CA 95204.
