He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 on January 5, 1945. He attended Radio Class A School at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, graduating as the "Honor Man" on December 1, 1945. He then reported to his first assignment on board the U.S.S. Noble in December 1945 followed by a tour of duty aboard the U.S.S. Portsmouth from September, 1947 to July, 1949. He served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. Subsequent tours included the U.S.S. Dashiell, the U.S.S. Hale, and the U.S.S. Stoddard. He was selected to attend Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in May, 1957, and received his commission as an Ensign in September, 1957. He received a BA in Political Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in June, 1967. During the Vietnam War, he served at the Coastal Surveillance Office in Quin Yonh from 1967 to 1968. While stationed in Quezon City, Philippines from 1972 to 1975, he served as an advisor to the Joint United States Military Advisory Group (JUSMAG) for the Republic of the Philippines, Navy Division. He also served at the U.S. Pentagon in Washington, DC. In 1976, he was assigned to the Naval Communication Station in Stockton, California as the Executive Officer. Commander Samuel Leroy Carr (Ret.) received numerous awards, letters of appreciation, and commendations throughout his military career. He has been a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Navy Fleet Reserve, Retired Officers Association, and the American Association of Retired Persons. He has been a resident of Calaveras County for 25 years, and worked for 10 years at the Welfare Department, Government Center, San Andreas. Survived by his beloved wife, Noran Carr of Valley Springs, CA; children, Kenneth Carr of Los Angeles, CA, Thomas Carr of San Diego, CA, Allison Carr- Mohmed of Stockton, CA; 11 grandchildren. Services: San Andreas Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation: San Andreas Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, February 22, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Committal: Pending at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
