The passing of Charlie Kaufman, as he was known to his many friends, brought deep regret in the community in which he was so well known and liked. His death was not expected for his condition had been serious in the last few days. Charlie operated the Gem theatre, which recently sold to the City of Colusa for a new city hall, for many years. He retired from the theatre business about 15 years ago. The survivors are his wife, Mrs. Genevieve Highstreet Kaufman; son, Robert Kaufman; brother, H. E. (Jeff) Kaufman; grandsons, Phillip and Blair, all of Colusa; and sister, Mrs. Celia Butz of Azusa, Calif. Mr. Kaufman was born in Meadville, Pa., and came to Colusa 40 years ago. Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 o'clock in Sullivan Brothers Chapel. Interment will be made in Colusa Catholic Cemetery tomorrow following the services with Sullivan Brothers directing. Mr. Kaufman, always a genial and obliging man, came to Colusa in 1910 and was first employed by the late B. A. Pryor, who operated a little movie house on Fifth Street. Ambitious and enterprising Charlie started his first movie theatre where A. W. Berry Store is now located, on Market Street. Later he brought about the construction of the Gem Theatre and was its proprietor for 15 years. He was a very successful showman and Colusans recall that Charlie brought the first talking pictures to his community. He retired from the theatre business in 1935. Mr. and Mrs. Kaufman were married in 1917. The death of Charlie Kaufman, for more than two score years a respected citizen of the community occasioned deepest sympathy for members of the family today.
