Colusa Herald, April 26,1927 pg 1 Pneumonia is fatal to Mrs Frances Hochstrat death last night removed from this community one of its oldest and most respected pioneer women. Mrs Frances Hochstrat, for 53 years a resident of Colusa, died at the advanced age of 98 years. Her death was due to pneumonia in its advanced stages. Mrs Frances Hochstrat was born in Germany on December 08, 1829. In 1852 with her parents she came to the United States, settling in Missouri. She was united in marriage with Henry Hochstrat, who died in Colusa about 18 years ago at the age of 82 years, on October 25, 1853 Nine children In 1874, Mr and Mrs Hochstrat came to California settling in Colusa, on the east side. in 1920, some years after the death of her husband, Mrs Hochstrat moved to Colusa to make her home with relatives. nine children were born to Mr and Mrs Hochstrat, four boys and five girls. All but four daughters survive. they are: Josephine Hochstrat of Colusa, Mrs Louis Gauthier of Oakland, Mrs Alex J Gauthier of Oakland, and Mrs Juluis Schnitzius of San Francisco. survivng also twenty four grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Fourth son dies It was but two weeks ago that this pioneer woman saw her fourth son, Frank Henry Hochstrat, aged 57 years pass to his reward. His sudden death came as a great shock to her although she bore up bravely under the strain. Despite her advanced age Mrs Hochstrat had a wonderful memory and could recall many interesting happenings of the early days here. She was cared for constantly by her daughter, Miss Josephine Hochstrat who is nearing 75 years of age. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but will be made upon the arrival of the other three daughters from the bay district. services will likely be held from the Catholic church here, of which Mrs Hochstrat was a member.
