Appeal Democrat Friday, November 29, 1940 Pg 1 Lawrence Schillig, Long A Sutter Leader, Taken By Illness at 71 Years Lawrence Schillig, 71, native of Grimes, resident of Sutter county practically his entire life, serving as legislator, district attorney and city attorney of Yuba City, prominent in affairs of the Yuba City -Marysville community for many years, died at his Yuba City home at 5:15 am Friday. Schillig had been critically ill for several days, and the end was expected by family and friends. He was stricken the day before Thanksgiving with an aggravated recurrence of the heart ailment with which he had been afflicted for some time. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Lipp & Sullivan in Marysville Saturday at 3 pm followed by interment in Sutter City cemetery. Schillig was a member of a pioneer Sacramento family, his parents Mr and Mrs Paul Schillig having located on Grand Island, Colusa County, among the earliest settlers, in the 1850's. After finishing public school, Lawrence attended and graduated Pierce Christian college at College City, In 1889, then completed his education in Hastings Law School in San Francisco, being graduated in 1892 and being immediately admitted to practice in the court of the state. He established himself in Yuba City, and worked there through the years, retired by advancing age. Served In Assembly: As District Attorney He was assemblyman from Yuba and Sutter Counties in 1900-1902, defeating H. P. Stabler. He was elected district attorney for Sutter county in 1902, defeating S. J. Stabler and served three terms, being defeated in 1914 by Arthur Coats. Following that he resumed private practice of law and built up an extensive clientele. He was city attorney at the time of and following the incorporation of Yuba City, which was in 1907. Schillig was prominent in the Masonic fraternity and in the community life of Yuba City and Marysville. He is survived by his wife, Jean Hough Schillig and two daughters, Mrs Dorothy Schillig Faoust and Mrs Elizabeth Schillig Schnereger, both of Los Angeles. A brother Frank Schillig of Los Altos and a sister, Mrs C. H. E. Hardin of Ocean Park, also survive him. Grandchildren are Mrs Jane Faust Easton of Rio Vista, John Faust, a student at Harvard University, Miss Judy Faust, and Bonnie Jewell Schnereger, both of Los Angeles. Fraternally, Schillig was affiliated with Enterprise Lodge No. 70, F and A. M. of Yuba City of which he was a past master, his membership covering 43 years and with Washington chapter, No 13, R. A. M. of Marysville. He was also a former member and past patron of Fidelia chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
