A. Slocum & Co., Publishers (1882) JOAQUIN HERNANDEZ.—Born in San Jose, July 3,1839, and afterwards lived on the family ranch near Los Gatos, Santa Clara county. In the year 1855, his father sold the family estate to James Alexander Forbes for twenty thousand dollars, and moved to Lower California, our subject returning at the end of two years, leaving his relatives there. He now came direct to Contra Costa county, and after following different occupations until April, 1859, he came to Concord and opened the first business in the village, there being then but two or three other houses. Married in Santa Clara, November 11, 1877, Custodia Avila, a native of California, and has three children: Frederico, Joaquin and Rosa.
