Distinguished Service Cross Citation
  Charles W. Bateman, pharmacist's mate, third class, United States Navy, attached
to 6th Machine Gun Battalion, United States Marine Corps. For extraordinary heroism
in action near Thiaucourt, France, September 12-15, 1918. Rendering first aid under
heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, he showed utter disregard for his own personal
safety, venturing through shelled areas to the assistance of the wounded. He
obtained most valuable information for the guidance of stretcher bearers. Residence
at enlistment: Giant, Calif.
