Warren Brown, which occurred on Tuesday night [May 14] at his residence near Lafayette, Contra Costa has lost a valued citizen and a good man. He was one of the few left whose home had been here since 1849, and during that long period of forty years no man has enjoyed the esteem of his fellow citizens in a greater degree than himself. Mr. Brown was son of the venerable Elam Brown, who at the patriarchal age of 92 still remains with us, wonderfully vigorous in mind and body. Warren was born in Morgan county, Illinois, June 19, 1826, and in 1846, at the age of twenty years, left Missouri, where they then lived, for Oregon. He was taken sick on the way, and compelled to remain at Fort Bridger while the [wagon] train proceeded on. Upon his recovery he continued his journey to Portland, Oregon, where he remained until September, 1847, when he came to California, engaged in the lumber business, afterwards spending a short time in the mines, and eventually settling in Martinez, where he engaged in [the] mercantile business. He successively served as County Surveyor, Member of the Assembly and Sheriff, in all of which positions he fulfilled his duties with strict fidelity. For several years past he had given his entire attention to the cultivation of his large ranch. He was a man of robust constitution and fine physique, and gave promise of enjoying an unusually long life. About two years ago, however, some organic disease began to manifest itself, but although his strength was evidently failing he continued to labor steadily until three months since, when he sustained a slight stroke of nervous paralysis. From this he rallied again, but never recovered his strength, and has been gradually sinking until the close. Mr. Brown was not only an extensive reader but he was a close student of history, and few outside of his intimate friends knew the extent of the information he had acquired. He was charitable to the views of others, but his own convictions were deep rooted and unchangeable. Firmly believing in the promise of a higher life, he could well have said: “Say not “Good night,” but in some brighter clime, Bid me “Good morning.” His death will be deeply regretted, and his memory cherished by all who knew him and learned to appreciate his moral worth and manly character. The funeral services will be held at Lafayette to-day (Saturday) [May 18] at 10 A.M., and the remains deposited in Alhambra Cemetery, Martinez.” END AND ADDITIONAL RELATED ARTICLES: Contra Costa Semi-Weekly Gazette May 22, 1889 (Wednesday) Page 2, Column 3 “Died. The deceased was a firm and consciencious [sic] believer in the doctrines of the Seventh Day Adventists, and a minister of that denomination, Elder Healey, of Petaluma, officiated at the funeral.” END Additional Comments: Contra Costa Semi-Weekly Gazette (Martinez, California).
