Death of Dr. John Labaree of Crockett – Victim of a Shot Gun. One of the saddest fatalities it has ever fallen to our lot to record occurred near Danville on Thursday. The victim was Dr. John Labaree of Crockett, late of Placerville. Deceased with his wife was on a visit to his cousin John Labaree [Jr.] for a few days, and sought to improve the opportunity while there to enjoy a little hunting. He left the residence of his cousin at about 9 o’clock on Thursday morning, and at about 2 p.m. his body was found about half a mile from the house with a shot gun lying by his side and his head literally torn in pieces, presenting a most horrible sight to the grief stricken friends and relatives who viewed the ghastly remains. Coroner Curry, to whom we are indebted for these facts, was at once notified and left immediately for Danville to take charge of the remains, which were taken to the home of his cousin, and an inquest held on Friday afternoon. Deceased was 49 years of age, and leaves a widow who was with him on his fatal visit to Danville, and a brother in New York. He was related to one of the oldest and most highly esteemed families in Contra Costa, and his tragic fate produces a feeling of sadness wherever he was known. He was a nephew of Dr. John Labaree [Sr.], one of the early settlers in San Ramon valley, who died some years since. The interment will take place in Alamo cemetery today (Saturday.)” END Additional Comments: Contra Costa County Gazette (Martinez, California). November 9, 1895 (Saturday).
