OAKLAND, Dec. 7. Napoleon B. Smith, who was prominently identified with the affairs of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the early days and came to California in 1846, died Wednesday [Thursday, December 5] at the Soldiers' home at Yountville. He was a veteran of the Mexican war and was born in Ohio in 1818. Smith settled here in the fifties and later moved to Martinez, where he married and reared a large family. He was buried in Alhambra Cemetery, Martinez. He married Margaline Brown, daughter of Elam Brown. He was the brother of Henry Clay Smith, another California pioneer with links to the early American history of Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
