Mr. Alderson was a native of England and came to the United States in his youth, coming to this State from Wisconsin when but eighteen years of age. He was among the pioneers that came in 1852 to El Dorado county, with whose early mining history, particularly of the vicinity of Placerville, his name is prominently connected. Shortly after his arrival here he and his brother Thomas Alderson, of this place, began mining just south of Placerville, or in those days Hangtown, at Coon Hollow, which at that time was a lively town of about 900 inhabitants and comprising the usual miners cabins, stores and saloons characteristic of the early mining settlements, thought at present not a vestige of the town proper remains and the rich gravel beds upon which it stood have been worked to the bed-rock. The first claims of Coon Hollow were on a small scale, being but fifteen feet square, and from these small beginnings the Alderson brothers, by securing from the other miners deeds to their claims, finally acquired extensive mines from each realized a fortune. Mr. Alderson has always been a quiet, industrious man, kind and liberal, and had many warm friends. His funeral which took place on Sunday last was very largely attended. He was interred in the Union Cemetery, the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member, having charge of the services. (We have known Mr. Alderson from our boyhood days in old Hangtown, and can vouch for everything the Democrat says of him. We extend to his bereaved family our earnest and heartfelt sympathy) Ed. Pioneer."
