A Good Old-Timer Gone

At his home in Placerville, March 19, 1902, after a long decline of health and
strength, Stephen Richards passed away.  He was a native of Cornwall, England,
aged 79 years, 8 months and 13 days.  He came to Wisconsin in 1841, where he was
married to Miss Elizabeth Walters, who survives him, in 1845.  He came to
California in 1852, thence returning to Wisconsin in 1855, whence he returned
with his family to California, in 1862.  Having worked in the mines about
Placerville for 16 years, he moved and spent two years with his family at
Gilroy, whence he returned to his first love and spent the rest of his
industrious and useful life with his family in this city.

During that time he was 11 years steward of the Hospital, and a genial and
generous friend of the sick and unfortunate.  In some way, he was always
befriending someone, or engaging in some honorable and useful employment. 
Besides the partner of his lifework, he leaves three daughters to solace her
sorrows and cherish the memory of a devoted and loving father.  These are Mrs.
J. L. Weymouth and Mrs. S. Alderson, of the city, and Mrs. Geo.Eustice, of
Gilroy.  The only son, S. J. Richards, died one year ago on the 21st day of April.

His funeral Friday, and interment in Union Cemetery, was conducted by Rev. E. M.
Hill, of the Methodist Church, under the auspices of Morning Star Lodge, No. 20,
Zeta Encampment No. 5, and Leona Rebekah Lodge No. 30, I.O.O.F."
