He was born at Lancaster, Virginia, September 5, 1824 and came to California by steamer in 1850, locating in Coloma, in this county. He was married in 1867 to Annie Richards, by whom he had three children, Stephen J. and Newton B. Weymouth and Mrs. Alice Potter, all of whom were with him at the time of his death. He was an enthusiastic member of the Masonic fraternity, having been made a Master Mason in Lancaster Lodge No. 88, before coming to California. He affiliated with Acacia Lodge No. 92 in 1857 and served as an officer of that lodge for five years, afterward joining El Dorado Lodge No. 26, becoming a member of Palmyra Lodge when the lodges were consolidated. He was also a member of St. James Chapter No. 16, R.A.M. and of El Dorado Commandery No. 4, K. T. He enjoyed the distinction of having served 101 years or terms of office in these bodies, having been an officer of the Blue Lodge 35 years, of the Royal Arch Masons 28 years and of the Commandery for 20 years. He was an amiable and gentle spirited man, a kind neighbor, an upright citizen and a conscientious Christian, and was beloved by all who know him with an affection that is rare among men. After a long and useful life here, he drifted naturally, easily and sweetly into the life to come. Requiescat in pace. The funeral ceremonies will be conducted by Palmyra Lodge No. 26, F. & A.M., escorted by El Dorado Commandery No. 4, K. T. on Sunday at 2 o'clock, p.m. and will, doubtless be largely attended.
